Our Recommendation

Castor & Pollux is one of the most popular organic dog foods out there. There is no question that this is a top-quality formula that is great for your dog. It is suitable for dogs that are sensitive to a lot of commercial dog foods.  This is a good choice for senior dogs and large breeds that need some extra glucosamine and good levels of fats.

• Organic free-range chicken and organic sweet potatoes are the first ingredients.
• Coconut oil, flaxseed, chicken fat, and fish oil provides a complex of oils that help with skin and coat. This is a great formula for dogs that have suffered in the past or are currently suffering from skin allergies or a dry and dull coat.
• At least 95% of the ingredients in each bag are certified organic. You might ask why not 100%, but the fact is that you cannot always find certified organic. That doesn’t mean that they are not produced holistically, just that it is not certified.
• No GMOs.
• No corn, wheat, or soy.
• No artificial colors or flavors.
• No animal by-products or digest. Only the highest quality ingredients are used in Castor and Pollux formulas.
• Dime sized kibble means it is small enough for all dogs to eat.
• Probiotics for better digestion and the promotion of healthy gut bacteria.

I can recommend this dog food but the high cost is going to keep a lot of pet parents away. I can see using this formula as a supplement to a cooked or raw diet. For example, if you are traveling with your dog it could be hard to cook or have enough prepared meals to get through the trip.

If you have a small dog then this would, of course, be a more affordable choice. Like a lot of organic dog foods, such as the Castor & Pollux Natural Ultramix dog food, the cost of dog food is probably going to go down as more people take a stand about the questionable ingredients that are still allowed in commercial dog foods.

Transition Instructions

Over the course of 7-10 days mix in an increasing amount of Organix until you have your dog eating just Organix. If your dog is not really sensitive you can reduce the transition to five days. The biggest concern when making a diet switch is an upset stomach. If this happens you should still continue to transition since it usually passes quickly. This super premium dog food is highly unlikely to cause even the most sensitive dogs any issues at all.

Depending on your dog’s size and activity level, they may need more or less food in their daily feeding amounts.

The Bottom Line

The ingredients are amazing and you don’t have to worry about any crazy chemicals,  GMOs or nasty artificial ingredients. If you don’t have time to cook or provide a raw diet for your dog then this is a good alternative and probably close to the same cost. I like that there are a lot of different oils and probiotics to complete the formula.

If you really want to cut out all the possible harmful ingredients, Castor & Pollux has a lot of formulas to choose from that are all made with the same quality standards in mind. It is hard to find any better quality out there if you can afford this brand.
